Introduction Gold discovered in 1852 brought Beechworth into existence. Suspended perilously on a steep hillside with streets plummeting at steep and unexpected angles, the stone buildings and range of not native trees are a sight to remember in autumn. A Mr Rochlitz planted the first vines in 1856 and within ten years a wine shop had been opened at Beechworth. Plantings reached 70 hectares under vine in 1891, but almost disappear by 1916. In the early 1970's commercial plantings recommenced.
