Introduction
Gold discovered in 1852 brought Beechworth into existence. Suspended perilously on a steep hillside with streets plummeting at steep and unexpected angles, the stone buildings and range of not native trees are a sight to remember in autumn. A Mr Rochlitz planted the first vines in 1856 and within ten years a wine shop had been opened at Beechworth. Plantings reached 70 hectares under vine in 1891, but almost disappear by 1916. In the early 1970's commercial plantings recommenced.

Primary Wine Styles

Chardonnay
Chardonnay is grown at most elevations by the prevalence of grape growers right across the region. At the highest altitude in the region the grapes most likely will be used for sparkling wines, while richer and fuller table wines will come from the lower altitude.

Shiraz
Has made its mark on stylish wines at intermediate elevation and more traditional at lower levels.
