Introduction
The Gippsland Zone remains Victoria's most remote and least-known winegrowing areas. As with many other zones in Australia, it produced fine table wine in the nineteenth century, and its revival in twentieth century goes back to 1970.

Primary Wine Styles

Chardonnay
Successfully made in all of Gippsland, however with greatest success in East Gippsland where low yields produce wines of wholly exceptional flavour, structure and overall impact. Characteristically deeply coloured and with layer upon layer of fruit flavours supported by generous use of French oak.

Pinot Noir
South Gippsland area shows that it is capable of creating what numerous regard as one of Australia's supreme Pinot Noir, and most Burgundian - fine and elegant, but with an illusory length and intensity, and a combination of plum, strawberry, tobacco and forest floor aromas and flavours.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot Franc
As the Gippsland Grape Growers and Winemakers Association indicate these varieties are usually blended in a Bordeaux-style red. Overall, they are on the light-to-medium side with a hint of mint, leaf and earth to the more conventional dark berry fruits. The tannins are generally fine.
